Your SAP AI Learning Path: From Fundamentals to Building Agents

You don’t need a 22-lecture syllabus. You need a path that ends in something working. This is the capstone of our learning series: four stages, in order, each with the resource that gets you through it.

The path

Stage 1 — Understand: how Joule thinks

Before anything else, get the mental model. Not “what Joule does” — how a request flows through it: you ask, it understands intent, it grounds the request in your business context, an LLM reasons, and it acts.

Once that clicks, every later decision gets easier, because you understand that the value lives in grounding, not the model.

Stage 2 — Map: the landscape and the value

Now widen the lens. Two maps matter:

• The tech map — Joule, Joule for Developers, Joule Studio, Joule Agents, SAP-ABAP-1, the MCP Server. Knowing which is which stops you wasting budget on the wrong tool.
• The value map — where AI actually helps, function by function (Finance, Procurement, Sales, HR, Supply Chain), and which use cases you can switch on today versus which need foundational work.

Stage 3 — Build: your first agent

Reading only takes you so far. The fastest way to get SAP AI is to build one small agent that does one real thing — create a record, read a transaction — through natural language.

Stage 4 — Scale safely: the clean foundation

Here’s where most “AI journeys” quietly stall. A demo agent that reads is easy. An agent that acts on your production system of record — posts documents, blocks partners, creates orders — is only safe when the objects underneath are clean-core and API-based.

So the final stage isn’t another AI tool. It’s the foundation: released APIs, remediated custom code, proper authorisation. That’s an S/4HANA migration done right — and it’s what turns AI experiments into things you can actually run in production.

Why the order matters

You can’t skip a stage and have it stick:

• Skip Stage 1 and you’ll over-trust the model and under-invest in data.
• Skip Stage 2 and you’ll buy the wrong tool for the job.
• Skip Stage 3 and it stays theoretical — you never build the instinct.
• Skip Stage 4 and your agents are stuck at “read-only,” because acting isn’t safe.

The path is deliberately shaped like a staircase: each step lifts you, but only if you took the one below it.
